University of Hertfordshire: Hertfordshire Law Clinic
The University of Hertfordshire’s Law Clinic provides free legal advice to members of the public. Advice is delivered by student advisers under the supervision of qualified lawyers. We are registered as a LawWorks clinic (LawWorks is a charity working in England and Wales to connect volunteer lawyers with people in need of legal advice, who are not eligible for legal aid and cannot afford to pay.)
We provide one-off verbal or written advice on the following issues only: Employment law, Family law, Housing law, Intellectual Property and Commercial law, LGBT+ law, Property law, Consumer/Contract Law, and Personal Injury and Contested Probate. We aim to comply with the professional standards applicable to the legal profession. However, we are not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and do not hold ourselves out to be a solicitor's practice.
If you have an advice session with us you will attend a video appointment. This will either be with a lawyer and two student advisers where you get verbal advice from the lawyer which is confirmed in an Attendance Note drafted by the students and sent out to you within 7 days, or with two student advisors alone who gather full details from you, but provide no verbal advice. The students then, under the supervision of a lawyer, research the relevant law and provide you with a Letter of Advice within 14 days. In both options we will also provide you with signposting for ongoing assistance. If for any reason we are unable to help you, we will try our best to direct you to another legal advice provider.
To book an appointment raise a referral through Frontline or email: probono@herts.ac.uk, or call: 01707 284115 and leave a message with your contact details.
